Maltacom yesterday opened a new network operations centre at its Birkirkara telecommunications complex.

The centre, better known as NOC, provides access to all remote systems - switching, transmission and other service platforms (e.g. Easyline) - enabling support staff to intervene without the need to be physically present on site.

The centre provides a view of each system's status by displaying alarms in real time. The technicians at the NOC can then take corrective action to rectify faults remotely.

In addition, it is also possible to activate new subscriber services or modify existing ones as may be required. Considering the importance of this operations centre, the site is manned on a 24-hour basis by highly trained staff.

The centre incorporates a main operations hall designed to accommodate up to 16 technical officers together with a number of adjacent offices for up to eight support staff.

It was inaugurated yesterday by Economic Services Minister Josef Bonnici.
