The heritage organisation Din l-Art Helwa yesterday urged Government to seek solutions to several important issues that continue to plague the island, including the neglect of key sites.

Three resolutions highlighting the need to implement with urgency a review of land use to prevent speculation and encourage sustainability; a review of the operations of the Board and Development Control Commissions of the Malta Environment and Planning Authority; and action to ensure that several key heritage sites that have been allowed years of inappropriate use be restored and given a dignified function, were taken by the association yesterday during its annual general meeting.

DLH criticised the neglect and maltreatment of three major heritage sites: Fort St Angelo outside the area occupied by the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, Fort St Elmo and the City Gate entrance to Valletta.

Noting that Government had found millions of liri for the Sliema Promenade and St James Cavalier, it urged Government to find the necessary resources to give City Gate a facelift that did not necessarily entail exorbitant expenditure, but should focus on practical criteria.

Anybody interested in doing volunteer work with DLH is invited to call the association on 2122-0358 or write to the Secretary General, DLH, 133 Melita Street, Valletta.
