A ceremony was held at the old university, in Valletta for members of the University of the Third Age who attended at least 75 per cent of four study units in 2001-2002.

The students were given certificates of participation by President Guido de Marco and were entertained by well known musician Freddie Mizzi.

The event was one of a number being held to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the University of the Third Age, or U3E as it is known. It was set up by the Department of Gerontology at the university in 1993, and at first had 190 members, which has since risen to about 900.

There are three centres: at the old university building in Valletta, at the Salesian School in Sliema and at the day centre in Ghajnsielem. The number of units varies from centre to centre. Apart from the academic side, the U3E also organises social activities and encourages contact with U3Es overseas, including travel exchanges.

It is open to those over 60 and registration opens in September every year.
