AD opposes higher buildings in Sliema

Alternattiva Demokratika does not agree with any increase in the present height limitation on buildings in Sliema.

The party yesterday presented its proposals on construction, resident rights and the protection of open spaces in Sliema, as part of its local elections campaign.

These proposals were presented during a press conference addressed by spokesman Michael Briguglio and AD chairman Harry Vassallo.

"In order to fully protect the particular characteristics of Sliema and to ensure that residents would not lose access to sunlight, AD will oppose any move to change the height limitation," Mr Briguglio said.

AD is supporting Sliema residents in defending the existing open space in the area known as il-Pjazzetta (Ghar id-Dud Square) and opposes the demolition of the Naval Clinic's façade, a grade 2 scheduled property. The proposed development comprises car parks, offices and apartments.

AD believes that open spaces should be enjoyed by residents, the elderly, the disabled, children, youths, civil society organisations and sports organisations.

It would also work for the introduction of parking schemes that give priority to residents - such as the obligation of non-residents to use temporary rather than permanent parking in areas characterised by congestion - as is the case in Victoria.
