Ines Borg, née Sammut, the oldest woman in Malta, passed away yesterday aged 106.

Mrs Borg's son Tony said she had been in perfect health all her life, was never sick and "did not even know what a headache was". She lived on her own and was still active and mobile until a few months ago, although she recently moved in with her daughter.

A spokesman for the parliamentary secretariat for the elderly said that the oldest woman in Malta is now Emanuela Borg, who turned 105 last December.

There are around 40 people aged 100 or over in Malta, the spokesman said.

Connie Galea was the oldest ever woman in Malta - she died in 2000 at the age of 109.
