"How about, rather than just looking at the faces of my childhood schoolfriends, organising a meal and meeting up after such a long time?" Edward Cachia said to himself, holding a photo of 48 years ago of his friends who attended Zurrieq Primary School.

Mr Cachia took action fast. He wrote to those former schoolmates who lived abroad and informed them of the date and venue. He communicated with those in Malta and, with their help, set off to organise his meal.

Among those living overseas and who managed to come to Malta, was Mr George Saliba, until recently Malta's Ambassador in Washington.

The get-together, which took place at the Vivaldi Hotel, St Julian's, was a success. Mr Cachia not only managed to bring his friends together but also promised to organise a get-together every year to keep up with everyone's news. To this and to Mr Cachia's excellent playing of the mandolin, everybody cheered and agreed.

10th anniversary of Chefchoice Ltd

This year Chefchoice Ltd is celebrating its 10th year of operations as processors and distributors of fresh and frozen meat and poultry products.

To this effect, a series of events are being organised, including a get-together, held recently for all employees at the Corinthia Jerma Palace Hotel, Marsascala.

Guests were treated to a wide variety of delicious cold buffet assortments and entertained by the Corinthia animators who managed to bring all to the dancing floor and perform games to remember.

Guests of honour included Dr Lawrence Gonzi, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Social Policy, and Mr Ninu Zammit, Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries, who both had words of praise for the effort that Chefchoice Ltd is making to be among the leaders in its field.

Joseph Mizzi, managing director, explained that success for Chefchoice Ltd was the result of hard work by all employees and asserted that the coming challenges are there to be embraced.

Mr Mizzi also inaugurated an exhibition of the plans for the future which include the extension of the factory operations in line with HACCP standards.

Mrs Dorothy Mizzi, director, distributed awards to staff who excelled during the year, in particular in team spirit, hygiene, customer care and loyalty.

A hamper and a 10th anniversary memento was also distributed to all staff by Mr Mario Tabone, finance director, Mr Anthony Alamango, sales and distribution manager, and Mr Andrew Agius Muscat, general manager.

Russian accolade to Malta Biennale

At a dinner in his honour at Villa Tempra, Mgarr, the new Russian Ambassador, Valentin S. Vlasov was delighted to learn that the Malta Biennale would, for the first time since its creation in 1995, be present in Moscow (August 18-29) at the Municipal Gallery A3.

Mr Vlasov showed tremendous interest in all the works of art and confessed to Dame Françoise Tempra that as a young man he fell totally in love with the works of the French sculptor Auguste Rodin (1840-1917).

To which Dame Françoise showed the sculptures of English artist Patricia Finch (1923-2001), especially the head of Dame Françoise's father, achieved in an extremely Rodinesque style. Mr and Mrs Vlasov enjoyed meeting some of the Malta Biennale artists and delegates among the 22 guests present.

In particular Mrs Elizabeth Jamil, Libya and UK delegate, preparing one of the Malta Biennale events on "Tradition and avant-garde in Libyan art", at both the Wignacourt Museum and The Vivaldi Golden Tulip Hotel; Mrs Shelley Tayar, USA, and Israeli delegate preparing in conjunction with Linda Eneix of the OTS Foundation in Florida the "Tribute to the Maltese Prehistoric Temple Culture", and Dame Françoise's sister, Mina Tempra.

Mr Vlasov, who had already met Fr Marius Zerafa, was impressed to hear that the much respected art historian, lecturer and restorer proved a no less distinguished artist, since his sculpted head of Fra Angelico was part of the collection of the Basilica of Santa Sabina in Rome, while another copy had been acquired by the Church of Santa Maria sopra Minerva, also in the Italian capital.

The Russian Ambassador was also pleased to meet again Dr Victor Ragonesi, who was so instrumental for Russian children to be sponsored for holidays in Malta and has been a trustee of the Tempra Museum for contemporary art as well as honorary legal adviser to the Malta Biennale.

The evening, after the cutting of the unavoidable Villa Tempra welcoming cake that said "Welcome to Villa Tempra, Valentin Vlasov and Elena Vlasova" ended with an overwhelming general singing of famous songs in various languages, including, of course, Ochi Ciornie!

Every month, on a voluntary basis, MITTS employees contribute a portion of their salary to the Generous Hearts Fund with the aim of raising enough cash to be able to help others in need.

The Generous Hearts Fund was established in November 1993 and is wholly run by MITTS employees.

BoV Value Pack competition winner at Playmobil

Bank of Valletta recently presented Josef Farrugia, an employee of Playmobil (Malta) Ltd, with two air tickets to Rome. Mr Farrugia is the winner of a competition organised by BoV at Playmobil.

This competition formed part of the bank's campaign to promote a Value Pack among Playmobil employees. Through this Value Pack, employees are encouraged to have their wage/salary credited to a BoV account through the bank's direct credit system and are also offered attractive terms and conditions on a number of banking services.

Mr Farrugia was presented with his prize by Jonathan Fenech Adami, BoV's Business Development manager. Playmobil (Malta) is one of the latest companies to benefit from a specifically tailor-made Value Pack from BoV. Helga Ellul, Playmobil's managing director, has always been a keen supporter of more efficient and innovative banking services both for the group as well as for the employees.

Congratulating Mr Farrugia, Mr Fenech Adami said BoV's direct credit system was a convenient and free arrangement with the bank whereby one's regular income was directed straight into his or her BoV account.

The system was ideal for anyone with a regular income and helped keep constant control over expenditure and plan one's weekly or monthly budgets in a most effective manner.

As soon as the salary is credited directly to the customer's account, he/she can access the money through various alternative delivery channels which BoV offers.

The wide range of channels available includes the network of Cashlink ATMs as well as BoV's Internet banking, telephone banking and also its Customer Service Centre.

Cash for Creche

The youth sub-committee of the Vittoriosa Lawn Tennis Club of Kordin recently organised a fund-raising country walk in aid of the Ursuline Creche. Chief protagonists during the activity were the very young members of the club who had a feast day climbing their way up Selmun heights and hiking the narrow paths to Mistra and then to St Paul's Bay, enjoying the beautiful scenery all along.

At times, the elder members of the club, who accompanied the youngsters were amused at the amount of energy stored up in the little dynamos.

At the end of the hike, the children showed further their golden heart by emptying their piggy-banks for the good cause. Days after, during various activities held at the club, they scoured the club's precincts collecting money from members and friends to give to the little ones at the Creche.

A few days ago, two nuns from the Ursuline convent in Sliema, accompanied by a group of beaming children from the Creche, were shown round the renovated tennis complex, particularly the Maltacom Central Court, where they were presented with a cheque.

Sr Rita Agius, on behalf of the Creche community, thanked the VLTC, particularly its young members, for their generous donation and commendable example.

Appreciation: Guzeppi Micallef

Mr Joshua Grech, PRO Kercem Feast Decorations Committee, writes:
The news of the passing away of Guzeppi Micallef shocked all in Kercem. Everybody soon knew about the accident he had while he was, as usual, doing voluntary work at the parish church.

We have lost a great friend and a benefactor. I wish to thank him on behalf of the committee.

We thank him for all that he did for us, for the help he generously gave us and the patience he had. His work not only shows his ability as a carpenter but also his open heart full of generosity.

We thank him in the name of the whole village, as well as in the name of all the societies that he work with and kindly helped. Meanwhile, as we sadly contemplate his death, we still remember him as an honest, busy, generous, and jovial man.

Surely these few words are not enough to acknowledge all his good deeds.

Even though Guzepp is no longer with us, we are certain that he is now enjoying the prize God has prepared for him, near Our Lady of Perpetual Succour, whom, he always loved with all his heart, and our patron saint Gregory the Great.

We know that from there he will continue to pray for us. With our heart we give him one last farewell, while we wait the day when we will meet again. We promise him to follow his saintly example.

Appreciation: Margaret Spalding

Ms Monica Wiedersum writes:
Three years ago, I was invited to Margaret Spalding's house to try and help her with raising funds for SPCA. It was the first time I had ever encountered her, or SPCA for that matter.

She was then, and of course even more of late, a very frail, slim, tall, elderly woman with thin long legs that always looked as if they could not support her. Because of this vulnerable appearance the thing that struck me most about her was her terrific strength of will and spirit.

At that time her husband Les was very much an invalid and as he sat all wrapped up in blankets, she managed, as she passed him by, to say some sweet word to him as she attended to the work she had so indefatigably done for 30 years to support the animals she so loved at SPCA.

It was she who convinced me to take up committee work and it was she who always supported me to the hilt, dragging herself to meetings even when ill, just to pass on her precious vote.

She also donated a lot of money whenever she could. She was, in my eyes, like Marjorie de Wolff before her, a heroic person and of course a champion and a crusader for all our stray animals. It gave me great pleasure, as president, to pass on the SPCA Silver Award to her during last year's fund-raising dinner.

Last summer we sat together on an Mdina terrace talking of life and God. She wanted, she said, to leave her body to University to be used for research. She believed that only animals knew how to love as she had to endure several cruelties from humans. She also told me that there was no God! I told her that by the time I had finished with her she would somehow believe in a Someone who had created that doggy love she knew so well!

I do not know what went on in her mind since, but I am told that on the day she died she asked her friends to take her to church with them. It was the first time ever!

When they came for her she could not open the door as she was down on the ground crying for help. She ended up being looked after in hospital instead of church, but by my reckoning He chose to come and look for her on the very day that she was looking for Him and He just came and lifted that strong, proud woman off the ground where she would have lain helpless for the first time in her life.

He knew her well!
