The Malta Shooting Federation adhered to its programme last weekend and held a Trap competition on 50 plus a 25-clay barrage final at its ranges. Competitors were vying for the Zammit Maempel cup.

John Marmara was in excellent form. He shot accurately to show the same kind of form which last year landed him with no fewer than seven competition wins. Close on Marmara's track was Nicky Carabott, who also demonstrated some fine fare to finish second overall.

However, the day belonged to someone else. Seven winters ago, Horace Micallef rocked the shooting sport when deciding to quit competition. The federation, at that time, had lost one of its most outstanding members.

Micallef took his surprise decision after one of the best achievements ever in foreign competitions. In November 1995, he was in India for the Commonwealth Championships. There, he shot a Championships record of 123 points in a 125-clay event. He returned with a bronze medal and another one of gold after winning the team event with Frans Pace, who had shot a creditable 120.

Micallef was named 1996 Sportsman of the Year and together with Pace he also claimed the team award.

However, last Sunday, Micallef wiped the protection oil off his gun and returned to the ranges with a 'bang', placing third in Class A and third overall after a shoot-off with Stephen Vella.

His performance was remarkable indeed even though he showed signs of lack of spirit and polish which I am sure he will regain with regular practising.

Overall: 1. J. Marmara 70; 2. N. Carabott 69; 3. H. Micallef 64; 4. S. Vella 64; 5. P. Vella 61; 6. J. Attard 60.

Meanwhile, another competition (50+25) was held on Sunday at the Qormi Clay Shooting Club.

Darren Vassallo was the winner after a shoot-off with Frans Bugeja. Both finished with a 61 score, followed by Emanuel Saliba on 60.
