Safi council has unanimously approved a motion for EU membership, urging residents of the locality to vote yes in the March 8 referendum.
The importance of tackling air pollution was one of the reasons cited. All the five councillors are Nationalist.
Sliema council also took a stand in favour of membership, recommending that residents vote "yes", citing the importance of funding for projects in the locality and the opportunities offered through twinning agreements. Six PN councillors voted in favour while two Labour voted against. One PN councillor was absent.
San Gwann also urged its residents to vote "yes", adding that the five PN councillors had voted in favour, while the three Labour councillors had left the room as they disagreed.
Safi, Sliema and San Gwann are the second batch of councils to take a stand on the EU, following Pietà council, which is also in favour.
