AD opposed to il-Pjazzetta development

Alternattiva Demokratika - The Green Party is supporting Sliema residents opposing the development of the area known as il-Pjazzetta (Ghar id-Dud Square).

The proposed development comprises car parks, offices and apartments. A hearing was scheduled a few weeks ago at the Malta Environment and Planning Authority but was put off.

The Green Party's spokesman Michael Briguglio pointed out that this development goes against the north harbour plan policy document.

"This document makes it clear that this open space should be safeguarded."

The project involves the demolition of the villa known as the Naval Clinic. AD is strongly opposed to the demolition of this building.

"This villa is designated as a grade 2 scheduled property. This designation precludes the developer from knocking down the façade of the building."

Mr Briguglio said the development would also have an impact on traffic flows.

"The site known as Il-Pjazetta has been unaltered for 150 years. This means that both the villa and the square have formed part of the Sliema urban fabric from the days of the earliest buildings in this town."
