The Ghajnsielem and Qala awards were presented to Spiro Cauchi and Fr Joseph Vella, during ceremonies held recently in the respective localities.

Spiro Cauchi is distinguished for his contributions to music in Ghajnsielem. He is known for his interpretation of Italian songs, and enjoys a reputation not only as a singer but also as a musician.

The award was presented by Ghajnsielem mayor Francis Cauchi, during a progamme of activities held at Maria Lauretana Centre. The first Ghajnsielem award dates back to 1995.

Fr Joseph Vella was presented the Qala award in recognition of his 48 years of priesthood service to Qala families.

Qala mayor Paul Buttigieg, who presented the award, told The Sunday Times that such a significant and prestigious award was given to Fr Vella for his valuable contribution, which was not only spiritual help, to all those in need.

The presentation ceremony, followed by a reception, was held at Qala primary school's library, and was attended by priests, relatives and members of various social, cultural, political and religious organisations.

Mr Buttigieg presented Fr Vella with a symbolic shield to be kept for one year, and another shield to be kept by him.
