Police caught two men red-handed after they broke into a bar and one of them tried to escape in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The police said yesterday the Valletta station received information that a robbery might be underway at a bar in St Patrick's Street. Officers rushed to the scene and discovered the bar door open and two padlocks and a torch lying on the pavement nearby.

The district police officers called for back-up from the mobile squad and the CID and the bar was surrounded.

One of the young burglars managed to run away. He was chased into St John's Street and the police had to fire warning shots before he stopped.

A knife was found on one of the men, the police said.

The two men are to be arraigned soon.
