The bishops made an appeal for calm and prudence in the wake of the attack on some members of the media at the Nationalist Party mass meeting in Floriana on Sunday.
The bishops appealed to the public to protect values which foster mutual respect as the country prepares to vote in the referendum on March 8.
The Archbishop, Mgr Joseph Mercieca, Gozo Bishop Nikol Cauchi and Auxiliary Bishop Annetto Depasquale urged everyone to be calm and prudent during this period.
The bishops also appealed to everyone to cooperate with any measures that are taken to keep order and civil behaviour.
"We are convinced that those who treasure peace would, like us, become concerned when incidents cause others to suffer some form of verbal or physical violence, as has happened to some people in the media in recent days," the bishops said.
They added that sour experiences of the past should help everyone take stronger measures against a repetition of such incidents.
