It was announced in The Sunday Times of December 29 that Professor Paul A. Zammit Lewis, Malta's honorary consul-general in Turin (with jurisdiction over Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta), retired as from January 1, 2003. This is a great disappointment for the Maltese community in the area and we will greatly miss him after almost 30 years' service.

Professor Zammit Lewis never hesitated to see us when we required his help in all possible circumstances. His involvement included his advice not only to us Maltese but he was always available to Italians and other citizens whenever they sought his advice about Malta.

He was always gentle with everybody and we also know that his staff at the Maltese consulate-general appreciated the way he trained them to have them ready to answer any urgent question about Malta in his absence although he could be contacted at any time.

We also know that he kept a continuous good relationship with the ambassador and staff at the Maltese Embassy in Rome as well as the authorities in Malta.

In such circumstances we feel sure that his almost 30 years' service will be appreciated by the Maltese government in the same way as other retiring Maltese consula.

Finally we would like to thank Professor Zammit Lewis for all he did for us Maltese in Piedmont during his tenure and we are sure he will continue to give us advice as before.
