The Malta Environment and Planning Authority (MEPA) has recently refused permission for the erection of telecommunications antennae in Ghajnsielem.
The application had been filed by Dragan Vlahovic on behalf of Vodafone Ltd, for the antennae to be put up atop Zewwieqa Flats, in St Anthony Street, Ghajnsielem.
MEPA's refusal was based on two grounds: the heightened residents' sensitivity to the potential risk to health, and the incompatibility of the project with the urban design and characteristics of the area.
The refusal was well received by Ghajnsielem council as well as by residents of the affected area, who had drawn up a petition stating that the antennae would interfere with their use of the building's rooftop.
They had also expressed concern about the negative impact such antennae would have on the health of residents.
Meanwhile, Vodafone has appealed the board's decision. The appeal will be heard on April 30. Ghajnsielem residents, assisted by Dr Michael Grech, and the local council, will be making their representations during the hearing.
