Parents and teachers at Chiswick House School and St Martin's College have planned cultural and cross-cultural activities that delve deeply into the traditions and customs of our way of life. In this way, the students are encouraged to appreciate and understand the richness and importance of their own culture and that of others.
Both schools firmly believe that every culture should be acclaimed for its diversity and wealth, and every year "weeks" are dedicated to the celebration of a particular culture.
Gimgha ta' Kultura Maltija and Una Settimana alla scoperta dell'Italia were two initiatives at Chiswick House School and St Martin's College, respectively, that ended last scholastic term with a cultural flavour!
The pupils at Chiswick House School participated fully in cultural outings, animated storytelling and Maltese cookery demonstrations. The children appreciated Maltese traditions and our rich history.
They also had the opportunity to test their knowledge in a fun quiz about Maltese history and customs. The parent and child art competition was very well received, as was the parents' heritage outing in Valletta.
The objectives behind Italian Week at St Martin's College were to involve all students in a learning experience both from a 'content' and an 'organisational' point of view, as well as to serve as an interdisciplinary link between Italian, Art, Music, History and PE.
The results - charts, projects, reproductions of famous masterpieces and models of castles - exceeded everyone's expectations.
Students also had the opportunity to watch Italian films, learning traditional Italian dance and song, cooking and eating Italian food, and organising and participating in a football tournament. The teams represented some of the most popular Italian football teams - kits included!
The proceeds of the sale of Italian delicacies went to the children of San Giuliano di Puglia, Italy, so tragically hit by an earthquake last year. Italian Ambassador Dr Alvise Memmo, the distinguished guest, and other personalities visited the exhibition and attended the prize-giving ceremony where students who produced the most noteworthy items were rewarded.
