A benchmarking exercise is being carried out of procedures at the drainage department by Ernie Ward, a consultant from Thames Water of the UK, together with Robert Demarco, an official from the commercial department of the same company, who are in Malta for a three-day visit.

The drainage department, together with a number of other government departments and organisations, had been chosen to take part in a benchmarking exercise on behalf of the Ministry of Finance.

For this exercise, the department is working in collaboration with the Office of Review of the Ministry for Resources and Infrastructure.

The project required the input from a benchmarking partner, which should be involved in similar activities. As no such entities existed locally, foreign assistance could be sought.

The government said Thames Water was chosen because of their prior involvement with this department after having assisted the drainage department around three years ago when through a partial sponsorship, it assisted in the delivery of Confined Space Training for four employees.

This initiative is being organised by the Ministry for Resources and Infrastructure and the drainage department in conjunction with Thames Water through its local representatives, Advanced Industrial Systems of Fgura.
