A couple have been charged with buying three mobile phones with stolen bank cards.

Victoria Ebejer, 26, of St Julian's and Stephen Galli, 37, of Sliema, are pleading not guilty to stealing more than Lm100 from Valletta on May 8, 2002, at about 5 p.m. to the detriment of Diane Xuereb, Bank of Valletta and HSBC.

Ebejer is also charged with fraud, forgery of public documents and the malicious use of forged documents while Galli was charged with complicity in these crimes and relapsing.

Inspector David Saliba took the witness stand to explain how his investigations led him to believe that Ebejer and Galli had acquired two bank cards and had gone to shop at the Vodafone outlet at the Embassy complex in Valletta.

They bought three mobile phones and paid for two with one card and the third with the other card, spending more than Lm300 in total.

Inspector Saliba said the defendants were caught on camera and they were eventually arrested and questioned.

Magistrate Carol Peralta, after hearing the evidence, ruled there were enough reasons for indictment.
