The French and German embassies marked in a joint statement the 40th anniversary of the Elysée Treaty signed by General Charles de Gaulle and Chancellor Konrad Adenauer on January 22, 1963.
The treaty sealed the reconciliation between the two nations and established the foundation for a durable peace in western Europe.
The Elysée Treaty, the embassies said, had given a decisive impetus to European cooperation.
The anniversary represented for France and Germany the opportunity to reaffirm their role in the process of the construction of Europe, they added.
