Othello at the Manoel

For Mario Micallef, the latest Shakespeare play in Maltese to be presented by his Talenti Theatrical Company at the Manoel Theatre this weekend presents a new challenge.
It is the first time he is directing a play - and no less than the tragedy Othello. "Although the play has been eight weeks in production, I had to start preparing five months in advance," Mario told me last week.
Talenti alternate tragedies with comedies (last year it was The Two Gentlemen of Verona), all translated by Alfred Palma. This is the theatrical company's seventh Shakespeare production in Maltese at the Manoel.
In addition to playing one of the leading roles, that of Iago, Mario was also responsible for the casting and the production - setting the theme, putting together the backstage crew and plotting the play.
"I am following the traditional interpretation of Othello and have opted for an open stage with levels and platforms," Mario said. "Lighting will play an important role and new period costumes by May Vassallo have been designed and sewn specifically for this play."
Mario Ellul plays Othello and other leading characters are played by Rachel Portelli, Nathalie Micallef, Michael Sciortino, Marcel Zammit Marmarà, Reuben Gauci, Joe Gauci, Joe Cortis, Ronnie Galea, Vanessa Mizzi, Tony Mizzi and Carmel Serracino.
Performances of Othello are on Saturday and Sunday with three matinee performances for schoolchildren on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (from 9.30 a.m. to noon). Booking is open at the Manoel, tel: 2124-6390.
