Junior event at RMGC

Seven young players entered the junior golf competition that was organised recently at the Royal Malta Golf Club (RMGC). They braved the cold wintry weather to play a Stableford round.

The golfers were split in two groups according to their playing ability. The better group was made up of J.J. Micallef, Nicky Farrugia, Daniel Galea and Matthias Busuttil. The rookies were Philip Bianchi, Daniel Holland and Sergei Davidenko. Farrugia and Bianchi won the respective groups.

The Junior Golf Academy at the RMGC aims to promote golf among a generation that is normally more accustomed to handle joysticks rather than golf clubs.

On average, 20 youngsters of both genders attend training sessions arranged regularly on Saturday afternoons.

The sessions are held under the watchful eye of Frank Richter. The RMGC currently has four juniors with a qualified handicap and three who play regularly in club competitions with their senior colleagues.

The January Monthly Medal and the Captain Andrews Cup were also contested at the club.

The respective winners and second placed for each Medal division were: Division One: Paul Stoner (net 65) and Bernard Bugeja (net 67); Division Two: Keith Woodward (net 63) and Michael Biggs (net 66); Edward Sullivan (net 67) and Vincent Curmi (net 68).

Stoner had the best gross for the day with a medal round of 73.

Greg Conley won the Captain Andrews Cup with a Stableford score of 42 points off Michael Biggs on countback.

The course was beaten on the day by a marvellous round of a gross 67 from Andrew Borg who thus equalled the prevailing course record.
