An Attard man was yesterday put on probation for three years and fined Lm150 for breaking into a car and stealing its stereo last year.

Ryan Dimech, 22, pleaded guilty to stealing Aaron Vassallo's car stereo from Rabat on April 29, 2001, at about 5.40 p.m., causing Lm50 damage to the car and relapsing.

Magistrate Consuelo Scerri Herrera heard probation officer Carmen Nygaard explain that, among other things, Dimech had a serious drug problem but was no longer taking drugs, had a fixed job and a steady relationship.

The magistrate also heard how Dimech had cooperated with his probation officer and social worker.

Police Inspector Marthese Micallef prosecuted.
