Even though political parties represent different but convergent shades of opinion, one would have thought that when a party leader orders a boycott, the rank and file would oblige.

This surely did not take place in the Labour Party/Alfred Sant boycott against Peppi Azzopardi's charity fund-raiser L-Istrina on December 28, since a good number of people known to have Labour tendencies all contributed to raising a massive record-breaking sum of Lm882,420.

A Labour MP even urged viewers to forget political differences and pique by contributing generously to the event.

The fact that all Socialist mayors observed the boycott contributed to make all Socialist mayors look like fools.

As things developed this was party confusion, disarray, disorder and indiscipline.
