Marsaxlokk's interest in signing former England international midfielder Paul Gascoigne has hit the news headlines of Britain's top news agencies yesterday.

BBC news and Skysports yesterday reported that the former England international is to fly out to the island soon to discuss a possible move.

The article added that Marsaxlokk were ready to offer Gascoigne a salary of £12,500 a month, plus an apartment in an exclusive resort in St Julian's.

BBC quoted former Marsaxlokk committee member Herman Schiavone, the man behind the idea of acquiring Gascoigne's services, as saying that the English midfielder was expected to arrive in Malta today. Schiavone also said that Gascoigne could take part in the team's training session in the afternoon, depending on his arrival time.

However, contacted by The Times yesterday, Schiavone said that the former England international will not be travelling to Malta today but he was still hopeful that the 33-year-old will accept Marsaxlokk's offer.

"Initially, we were expecting Gascoigne to arrive in Malta tomorrow (today) to start discussing our offer over a possible move. However, we have been in contact with his representatives who informed us that the player will not be travelling to Malta," Schiavone said.

"His agents assured us that Gascoigne is still interested in our offer but he is weighing up his options after receiving offers from an Italian club and another from the Far East.

"However, we believe that we made the best bid for the player and we are confident that Gascoigne will be joining our club."

In the past few weeks, the former Newcastle, Tottenham, Rangers, Middlesbrough and Everton midfielder has been linked with numerous clubs, but for various reasons has failed to gain a contract.

There were reports in the English newspapers recently saying that Gascoigne was suffering from breakdown problems in the last few weeks and was seeking medical assistance.

The last club Gascoigne has played for was Division One side Burnley but was released at the end of last season.
