Lawrence Quintano is to be appointed magistrate after the Cabinet yesterday approved his nomination. He is expected to take the oath of office next month.
Dr Quintano works at the Attorney General's office, where he advised a number of departments and also appeared before the Constitutional Court in connection with allegations of breaches of the Constitution or the European Convention of Human Rights.
He has been particularly active in the Council of Europe and has also represented the government both at the European Commission of Human Rights and the European Court of Human Rights.
He is a member of the Committee of Advisers on Public International Law and of the Committee on Human Rights and is a senior lecturer in civil law at the University of Malta.
Dr Quintano is married to Antoinette née Gauci and has two children, Elizabeth-Mary and Patrick.
