Still true

The 'A century ago' column referring to the furious driving of horses along the narrow roads of the villages 100 years ago still holds good for the reckless driving of cars. The same can be said of the appeal made in the same column that the police should not wait until someone has been injured before action is taken.

I live in the old part of the village of Lija and there is absolutely no control of the way drivers speed around the narrow streets. Wardens are practically non-existent and when they do appear it is to book some unfortunate person who parks his car slightly askew.

There are many elderly people living in Triq il-Kbira and Triq il-Forn which, although having two names is one circular road around the village church. The way some people drive along this very narrow road is scandalous and an accident is just waiting to happen. Lija council must take the bull by the horns and try and stop some of this frenetic driving as well as those who go around the village with stereos blaring at all times of the day and night. It is true that there are 'Slow' signs but these have never had any effect. What was true 100 years ago is still very true today.
