In line with government policy to implement gender mainstreaming as a strategic tool to bring about gender equality in Maltese society, Professor Teresa Rees, EU expert on gender mainstreaming and Equal Opportunities Commissioner for Wales, was invited to Malta to advise on conducting an impact assessment project for three ministries - Education, Health and Social Policy.

Maltese women MPs and members of the Commission for the Advancement of Women, National Council of Women representatives and representatives of other women's associations had a meeting with Professor Rees in the Committee Room at the House of Representatives, during which several issues concerning men and women in different areas were discussed informally.

Professor Rees spoke about access to EU structural funds to implement gender equality projects. She also highlighted the importance of increasing the participation of women in science. Professor Rees spoke about the high presence of women in the Welsh Cabinet - five out of nine, all gender equality experts.

Cultural change can come about by creating awareness of present situations and by publishing statistical data identifying areas where imbalance persists. Professor Rees believes that offering more choices to men and women is a positive strategy. The dialogue concentrated on a number of areas including implementation of gender equality legislation, women's participation in science and research, human rights, women's health issues and the need for more women in decision-making positions.
