It is here. This morning from eleven o'clock onwards l-Istrina will be on TVM raising funds for a number of good causes. This year the beneficiaries of your generosity will be the Community Chest Fund, Razzett tal-Hbiberija, Life Cycle (which helps people with kidney problems) and the Moviment Missjunarju Gesu fil-Proxxmu (for Brazilian children suffering from Aids).
Just before kick-off we would first of all like to thank all the people who have been tirelessly working for over two months to make today's l-Istrina happen. For them, weekends, evenings and the Christmas holidays themselves have had to take a back seat to the thousand and one preparations.
The celebration of generosity that is l-Istrina has already been on the march for two months. Many businessmen and companies have already donated Lm137,000 worth of prizes to be given away today, including eight cars and 1,001 Encarta Encyclopaedia packages. These acts of philanthropy from the business community deserve everyone's heartfelt thanks.
L-Istrina is nothing without the hundreds of politicians, singers, trade unionists, media people, actors, civil and community leaders and a myriad other personalities who play their part.
Whether it is the Archbishop taking your donations on the phone, Emy Bezzina impersonating Enrique Iglesias, Kurt Castillo miming Disco Inferno or Simone Cini singing a Christmas song in her own voice, the scope remains the same: to make l-Istrina work for the benefit of those who need our solidarity.
Most of all, however, thanks are due to all of you men, women and children of goodwill who have turned this event into a genuinely national expression of solidarity. We hope that this year you will once again make it an even bigger success.
Well, this is it.
The stage is set, the organisation is in place and the programme is ready for lift-off.
