The Malta Transport Authority said yesterday it had asked the Permanent Commission Against Corruption to investigate allegations by Labour MP Charles Buhagiar on land acquisition procedures adopted by the Roads Directorate.

The Labour MP, speaking during the budget debate, had said that officials from the Roads Directorate were negotiating the price of lands directly with the land owners and once a deal was struck, the Lands Department was asked to publish the contract. He had said that the system was open to abuse, and he knew that abuse had actually taken place.

The authority said it was of the "firm belief" that the allegations were unfounded.
