Din l-Art Helwa youth members from San Anton School are carrying out a study project on Fort Madliena.

The British fort, built in 1878, dominates the Bahar ic-Caghaq area and forms part of a number of fortifications along the Victoria Lines.

The project is being conducted over a 15-month period and is divided into five phases of research interspersed with lectures, practical and final presentation work.

Fifteen students, aged between 13 and 15, gave parts of the fort a thorough clean-up, interviewed members of the Armed Forces who occupy it, photographed those parts of the fort which are in dire need of restoration and made sketches of those features they found most interesting.

Students cleared some 15 bags of rubbish which were then disposed of by the AFM.

The next phase of the project will see students conducting a survey among Madliena residents, other students and foreign visitors, which will establish the general knowledge and perceptions of the fort.

San Anton is one of six schools taking part in Teenager Din l-Art Helwa projects, all of which are intended to foster appreciation of heritage among young people.
