A team of young divers will be attempting a 48-hour diving marathon in the Coastline Hotel's indoor pool to raise money for the beneficiaries of this year's l-Istrina: the Community Chest Fund, ir-Razzett tal-Hbiberija and other organisations.
Eight divers will take turns to dive for about two hours each, uninterrupted, starting on December 26 at 4 p.m.
The main team is composed of Kevin Aquilina, John Bugeja, Marietta Borg, Natalino Caruana De Brincat, James Galea and Diane Sammut.
All divers will take the necessary safety precautions to minimise risks. PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) safety procedures will be followed throughout the dive.
"Considering such a record has never been achieved nationally or internationally, the team hopes to attract more funds to the cause," the organisers said.
The present record of 36 hours is held by a UK team of divers.
Throughout the marathon, the team will be backed by three main sponsors: the Coastline Hotel will host the event; Subacqua Supplies and Services Ltd, sole agents of Mares, will provide the diving equipment, while Eagle K-Wear Ltd is providing outdoor sports wear.
Various underwater activities, such as games of chess and checkers, will be organised to kill time.
A gift will be given with every donation made at the event.
