Fondazzjoni Nazareth yesterday inaugurated its second home for persons with disability at San Lucjan Street in Zejtun.

The house was bought, renovated and furnished by the foundation at a cost of Lm60,000. The Housing Authority contributed Lm25,000 to the project.

Called Dar l-Arcipriet Degabriele, the house will accommodate four men and two women.

The FN's first home, Dar Nazareth, is also in Zejtun. It was opened seven years ago and houses nine persons.

The homes owe their origin to Dun Ang Seychell.

Speaking prior to the inauguration, Fr William Axiaq said that Dun Ang had been inspired to open these homes by parish priest Lawrence Degabriele, after whom the new home is called, and by Jean Vanier.

Fr Degabriele, who lived between 1852 and 1932, was known for the work he carried out among the poor of his parish, going out of his way to assist them to the extent that he died penniless.

In 1964, Jean Vanier, after a career in the navy, a doctorate in philosophy, and a college teaching career, invited two men with mental handicaps to set up a home with him in Trosly-Breuil, a small village in France.

He called the home L'Arche - the Ark, as a symbol of life, hope, and covenant with God and Man.

The foundation stone of L'Arche is the idea of 'living with' and not just 'doing for' those with mental handicaps.

Marija Mercieca, one of the residents at the new home, welcomed visitors and thanked all those who contributed to the completion of Dar l-Arcipriet Degabriele.

Ms Mercieca said that living together enabled persons with disability to live in a family atmosphere, helping them to live a more humane life.

The home was inaugurated by John Giordimaina, another resident, in the presence of MPs from both sides of the house, volunteers and the Zona San Girgor choir among others.

The house will be open to the public today and tomorrow.
