Ticketing machines are currently being installed at Mgarr Port to ensure a more efficient way of obtaining ferry tickets, while avoiding long queues. Passengers will also be able to purchase their tickets beforehand, and not only prior to boarding the ferry. The machines are expected to begin operating at the end of this year.

John Sullivan, chairman of the Gozo Channel, told The Sunday Times that a collective agreement was being negotiated with UHM, which he hoped would be signed soon despite some differences.

As regards environmental protection, Mr Sullivan said that today local and international laws ensure that the necessary precautions are taken against oil spills. Although the new vessels are environment-friendly, the company is still ensuring that they cause no pollution, he said.

Mr Sullivan also said that the whole project is expected to be fully operational upon the completion of the terminals, when passengers travelling without a car will be boarding the ferry from walkways.

He added that the company is working hand in hand with the Maritime Authority and the Police to create as little inconvenience to passengers as possible.
