A total of 19 tourism accommodation establishments have applied to join the eco-certification scheme launched by the Malta Tourism Authority last October.
The establishments ranged from three-star to five-star properties, the MTA said.
Eco-certification is a scheme that reduces the impact hotels have on the environment by cutting operational costs without, however, reducing quality.
The MTA developed the scheme following tourist perception and environmental awareness research.
There are 130 environmental criteria in 10 areas of assessment: environmental management systems, waste management, products and materials, energy use, water use, air quality, noise protection, buildings and green areas, local culture and guest information.
Establishments interested in the scheme must also be ready to commit themselves to a process of continuous improvement to reduce their impact on the environment.
In addition, hotels have to propagate environmental awareness among their employees who, in turn, will spread this awareness to their families and others. Hotels must also demonstrate their commitment towards a better environment for locals and tourists alike.
The hotels that applied to join the scheme have designated an environmental coordinator to participate in a training programme on how to implement the scheme. Hotels may then apply for an eco-certification audit next month.
