Appreciation - Major Peter Manduca

by G. Attard Manche

Peter Francis Anthony Manduca was my friend. In my teens I used to tease him over the back-wall of our garden, which abutted on to his garden. Peter proclaimed that his was a real garden, while I only had a patch of soil; I countered this by calling his garden a field and this became his nickname. To me he was Peter ta l-ghalqa.

We went to different schools - he was groomed at St Edward's, while I was being educated at the Lyceum. But then came Sandhurst which we attended together and the Royal Malta Artillery in which we both served.

Peter was a first-class Army officer with outstanding man management. He served with distinction in the Royal Malta Artillery for 20 years with highlights as an inspirational adjutant in 1st Regiment during their tour in Germany and as a superb ADC to Sir Maurice Dorman, the Governor General. He continued to serve his country during the changed political scene of the '70s, when he commanded 800 pioneers in the Armed Forces - a task which called for the patience of Job and a skin an inch thick. He finally resigned when he found that he could not follow orders with a clear conscience.

There followed some hard times for Peter but the situation improved when he became the secretary to the Union Club, a job which he excelled at; I am sure that many members would endorse this. It was typical of Peter that he would not bend the rules to stay on as secretary beyond retirement age; he led by example.

Peter had style. He was a suave, well groomed man with impeccable manners. He had two inborn features: integrity and loyalty. He loved his family. He could fix you with a steely look, but there was always a twinkle of humour in his eyes and his smile could disarm the coldest heart. All right sir: "obey the last order," is what he used to say to me and then did what he felt was right.

Peter was blessed with two marriages. He looked after Mary Clare with devotion and care and tended to her with determined forbearance when she was ill. Anna, in her turn, has mirrored this devotion and has been indefatigable in her efforts to ensure that Peter was cared for; I know how much he appreciated this.

Peter was blessed with five children. To them I say your father was a man to be proud of and I am privileged to have been his friend. God bless you Peter and keep you.
