The Valletta Rehabilitation Project is restoring the fresco on the vault at the entrance of the palace in Valletta. The work is in a very precarious state due to its exposed location.

The work is being carried out by the Wall Painting Department of the Courtauld Institute of Art which forms part of the University of London. It has been entrusted to senior conservationists Stephen Rickerby and Lisa Shekede.

Keith Sciberras has been commissioned by the VRP to carry out historical research on the fresco.

The fresco was probably made by one of the Grech brothers in the late 18th century, the VRP said.

Restoration work on the Paladini and Perez D'Aleccio paintings at the Palace are continuing.

The VRP said it had also restored a 1769 statue of the Immaculate Conception in Floriana.

The project was carried out by Restoration Unit staff currently attending a course in heritage skills at MCAST together with Italian restorers from Sider-Iteras.
