A prototype low-floor bus was launched yesterday by Exalco Group of Companies, sole agents and distributors of the Solaris range.

The Solaris Urbino Low Floor Bus was built specifically for Malta's public transport system and was the eighth low-floor bus launched of the 147 originally booked by bus owners, Transport Minister Censu Galea said.

It is the first bus that has had the standard ticketing machine installed. The machines are being installed on the 508 buses of the public transport fleet at the expense of the government.

The Solaris Urbino Low Floor Bus has already been sold and orders were being received from other bus buyers, Exalco managing director Alex Montanaro said.

The bus seats 45 passengers, has access for the disabled by means of a fixed ramp, boasts large windows, automatic transmission and air-conditioning.
