An environmental fair kicked off at the university campus yesterday, aiming to raise awareness about environment protection and sustainable development among the university's 12,000-strong student and academic population.

The fair is being organised for the second year running by the environmental policy committee of the University Student's Council (KSU), in collaboration with the Malta Environment and Planning Authority and other organisations.

It was inaugurated by parliamentary secretary for the environment George Pullicino in the presence of KSU president James Scicluna and committee chairman Joanna Delia.

The fair, open today and tomorrow, includes information stands, videos, music and paintings under a marquee tent in the Atriju Vassalli Quadrangle.

The committee will also be informing students of its policies on energy, marine pollution, waste, the natural environment and traffic.

Today at noon there will be a debate on 'Negotiations, the EU and the environment', while tomorrow's debate held at the same time will be dedicated to 'Alternative modes of transport for university students'.

The environmental campaign will also consist of tours of Wied Ghollieqa and the collection of plastic, glass, metal and paper waste in large containers to promote waste separation at source.

The final day of the fair has been chosen by the committee as Car Sharing Day on campus, with the largest car park being reserved for cars carrying three people or more.
