The next tree planting season by the Gaia Foundation starts soon.

Last season, the foundation planted about 2,000 trees and shrubs in Ramla Bay, Gozo, with the support of the Malta Tourism Authority and Bank of Valletta, as part of the EU Life Programme.

The trees consisted largely of tamarisk, golden samphire and shrubby orache and were planted in an area of ecological importance that was heavily degraded due to offroading and illegal parking.

"As a consequence of this, there was a heavy run-off of rain water, silt, mud and clay onto the sandy beach and close to the sand dunes and temporary wetlands. Thanks to the plants, which have now started to take root and have been watered throughout the summer months, the clay slopes are at an advanced stage of rehabilitation," the foundation said.
