Bank cards accounted for the vast majority of e-commerce transactions, and within the EU region alone, e-commerce accounted for estimated annual sales volumes of up to E19 billion, Tonio Depasquale, chief officer for credit management and retail banking of Bank of Valletta said.
Another area of high potential was that of m-Commerce which involves transactions using mobile phones, he said.
Mr Depasquale was a keynote speaker at a conference on consumer credit organised by the European Financial Management and Marketing Association (EFMA) in Paris.
EFMA is a non-profit association of European banks, insurance companies and other financial institutions and serves as an observatory of innovation and best practice in the fields of financial services management and marketing. Two thirds of the largest European financial institutions are EFMA members.
