The director of the International Institute on Aging, Prof. Frederick Fenech, has welcomed the recent grant to the institute from the Merck Institute for Aging and Health.

"This is the first time that the institute has financial support for its training programmes from institutions besides the UN agencies," he said.

The institute received a grant for its 2003 and 2004 training programmes which are held here.

Eight fellows in all will attend short-term training programmes between February and November.

Two diplomats will also be taking part in the postgraduate diploma course in gerontology and geriatrics at the European Centre for Gerontology, University of Malta, which starts in October.
