Faculty of Science
The faculty of Science comprises seven departments and offers a two subject Bachelor of Science (Honours), B.Sc. (Hons). Moreover, the Faculty offers postgraduate degrees leading to Master's degrees and doctorates in various fields of science.
The aim of the B.Sc. course is to equip students with the basic scientific knowledge, practical skills and confidence necessary to pursue a scientific career. This means: developing an understanding of science, knowledge of its methods, criteria, limitations, and importance to mankind; developing a concern for objectivity, accuracy, and a critical attitude towards learning; and developing the necessary technical, mathematical methodological and communication skills which will help students both in their future professional career and in personal enrichment.
Many different careers are open to science graduates because of their developed skills in numeracy, logic, analysis, and methodology. A good way to prepare for the future is to study a combination of science subjects, in a way which allows close interaction with students taking other subjects and which develops knowledge and skills in the scientific and social implications of the subjects studied.
Science graduates are recruited for their broad scientific training. Many eventually work in multi-disciplinary teams and can obtain initial employment in diverse fields, the major categories being manufacturing and allied industries, laboratory-related work, teaching, research academic posts, and computing.
The Faculty offers seven subjects (Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Informatics, Mathematics, Physics, and Statistics and Operations Research), which may be combined in a two-subject B.Sc. (Hons) degree.
Guidance teachers need to stress to students the importance of the sciences and the numerous opportunities that exist for science graduates. Malta needs more science graduates especially in the newer areas such as computer science.
