A break-down of criminal cases handled by the police in September shows there was one case of child abandonment and one case of computer abuse.

Home Affairs Minister Tonio Borg said in reply to a parliamentary question that 838 theft cases were reported in September and 308 cases of damage.

The other reported cases were: five cases "against morals and honour of the family", 14 cases of arson; 82 attempted offences; 91 cases of bodily harm; six drugs cases; one forgery case, two fraud cases; 21 cases of illegal immigration; one prostitution case, four cases of sexual offences, eight cases of threats and private violence and 11 cases of violence against public officers.

The theft cases included 228 thefts from cars and 129 thefts from bars and hotels. There were two hold-ups, 44 pick-pocketing cases, 11 cases of "snatch and grab" and 12 thefts from boats.

The minister said six boats were stolen and there were 40 thefts of cars, eight thefts from factories, 40 from residences, 64 from shops and 30 from beaches. There were also 224 "other" cases.

The information was requested by Labour MP Gavin Gulia.
