Maltapost corporate services general manager Joseph Gafà has been elected on the PostEurop's management board for the years 2003/2004. His appointment to the board follows an election held recently, where the member delegates cast their ballots for the appointment of a new board.

This is the first time that the postal administration of Malta will be serving on the PostEurop Management Board. Mr Gafà is actively involved in a number of PostEurop projects including CAPERS, UNEX Lite, Terminal Dues Action Group (TDAG) and Terminal Dues Sub-group for Pre-Accession countries.

PostEurop is a non-profit organisation and is an officially recognised Restricted Union of the Universal Postal Union (UPU). The principal objective of PostEurop is to promote and represent the views of European public postal operators in the international postal arenas.

The election for the new Management Board took place during PostEurop's annual plenary assembly held at Hersonissos, Crete. The meeting brought together delegates from 42 postal operators across Europe who had the opportunity to discuss the new arising challenges brought by increased competition, rising customer expectations and new technologies.

Participating delegates were addressed by a number of key speakers. Jean-Francois Rodriguez of the European Commission's Internal Market DG, talked about standardisation. This is considered by posts as an important tool for improving their operations.

George Goumes, international mail director at Greece's ELTA, introduced a discussion on the delicate task faced by posts when they need to balance their social obligations with their set commercial goals.

In view of new technologies and new operators in the market who are changing the business landscape, Knud Pedersen, deputy CEO at Post Denmark, offered listeners useful insights on how they should position themselves strategically.

The highlight for Malta's delegates attending this plenary assembly came on the first day when following an election, Malta's submission was awarded the best Europa stamp design for 2002.
