New security measures at the Eurochange exchange bureau in St Julian's foiled an attempted hold-up at around 12.45 p.m. yesterday.

Eurochange director Mark Gatt said there was one cashier on duty at the time of the attempt, and no clients were in the bureau.

Two hooded men pulled up in a blue Ford Escort and pointed a gun at the cashier.

However, following a successful hold-up about a year ago, the bureau had been made completely secure, and the steel enclosure is completely bulletproof, Mr Gatt said.

The police said the car was later found abandoned in Pembroke.

Eurochange has three bureaux: in St Julian's, Sliema and Gozo.
