Animal welfare and social activists are organising a demonstration in favour of animal protection, at Freedom Square, Valletta on November 19 at 5 p.m.

The protesters will stop outside parliament, where they will hand letters to MPs calling on them to emphasise the importance of enforcement of the new animal welfare act.

"Many cases of animal cruelty continue to be reported, with little evidence to date of prosecutions. The animal protection NGOs are willing to assist the police in investigating cases of animal cruelty, and arranging appropriate training for law enforcement officers," they said in a joint statement.

The organisers called on animal lovers to support this peaceful demonstration.

The groups taking part are: Animal Rights Group; Azzjoni Pozittiva; Catcare Association; Community Animal Welfare Society; GLUE; International Animal Rescue (Malta); Island Sanctuary; Moviment Graffitti; National Cat Society; Nature Trust; St Francis Foundation for Animals; Support for Abandoned Animals; and World Animal Conscience.
