It is with a bitter sweet feeling that I put pen to paper to say a big "thank you" to the late Fr Raphael Vella, an exemplary priest. Fr Raphael, who was better known for his indefatigable work among Maltese migrants, was loved and held dearly by all Gzira parishioners. He was a person who not only radiated God's love but instilled in all who crossed his path that strong faith in the Father's providence.

Among his many gifts two stood out - his engaging smile and fatherly embrace. His heart was so big there was a place for everyone. Here was a priest who was the perfect embodiment of Jesus, the humble servant of all mankind.

In his dignified and solemn funeral, I experienced the bitterness of parting but also the sweetness of Heaven's joy, which Fr Raphael was showering on all his brothers and sisters to whom he gave his life. May I, as one who benefited from his ministry, and on behalf of all Gzira parishioners say "Grazzi ta' kollox Dun Rafel" and pray for us.
