The Malta Shooting Federation last Sunday organised a 50-clay and 25-clay barrage competition.

This event replaced the shoot that had originally been scheduled to be held at the Hal Far Ranges, which are undergoing maintenance.

The Gaba Diamonds Trophy went to the shooter presently delivering the most consistent performances - John Marmara.

Overall, the competition provided a spectacle from the first round where no fewer than six shooters had notched a 24-score.

From then on, control and concentration were the key for success, and Marmara had it all. A 25 straight hit in the final was the icing on the cake by this in-form talented shooter.

Class A: 1. J. Marmara 47; 2. J. Attard 47; 3. E. Borg 45.

Class B: 1. P. Camilleri 46; 2. F. Skorfna 44; 3. E. Saliba 40.

Class C: 1. M. Galea 44; 2. W. Rogers 43; 3. J. Cassar 41.

Final barrage: 1. J. Marmara (47+25) 72; 2. J. Attard (47+21) 68; 3. P. Camilleri (46+22) 68; 4. F. Pace (45+22) 67; 5. S. Cardona (45+21) 66; 6. E. Borg (45+18) 63.

Joe Attard was awarded second place after winning a shoot-off with the upcoming Paul Camilleri.

The second Airweapon meeting of the season was also held at the federation ranges at Bidnija.

In the first competition, the established participants carried on where they left off last season and this was also the case last Saturday.

In air-rifle, the young and talented William Vella this time overcame the challenge of Mario Abela and Lawrence Darmanin to claim his first victory.

Anton Camilleri confirmed his recovery to full fitness from his arm fracture, maintaining his record in the air-pistol competition - scoring above the MQS mark.

Last season Camilleri always did better than the 562 MQS threshold in the competitions, and he has kept the trend going in both this year's meetings.

Air-rifle: 1. W. Vella (560+98.1) 658.1; 2. M. Abela (554+98.3) 652.3; 3. L. Darmanin (553+98.1) 651.1.

Air-pistol: 1. A. Camilleri (576+90) 666; 2. R. Cacciattolo (536+98.1) 634.1; 3. T. Galea (515+88) 603.
