James Bonello, head of commercial banking at HSBC Bank Malta, has been appointed to the bank's board of directors with effect from October 22.

He replaces Jeremy Hunt and is the first Maltese executive director of the bank.

The appointment of Mr Bonello also means that for the first time, the majority of the HSBC Bank Malta board of directors is made up of Maltese nationals, the bank said.

"Through the appointment of the first Maltese executive director to its board, HSBC Bank Malta is again putting the bank's words, that is 'the world's local bank', into practice.

"James Bonello has a long and distinguished banking career and there is no doubt that he will be a great asset to HSBC Bank Malta's Board in the years ahead," HSBC Bank Malta's chairman Albert Mizzi said.

Mr Bonello, whose banking career started at 17, was appointed head of commercial banking at HSBC in 1999, having previously been the general manager of operations, with responsibility for credit and finance departments at Mid-Med Bank.

Apart from his career with the Bank, Mr Bonello has also served in distinguished positions within a number of other organisations.
