BirdLife awards

BirdLife Malta yesterday presented awards to winners and participants of its third Dinja Wahda campaign in primary schools, held in collaboration with state and private schools.

Students were asked to complete environmentally friendly tasks, such as collecting old newspapers for recycling and used batteries for safe disposal.

They also cleaned up areas in schools or in towns and villages and learned how to care for plants and animals.

Acorns were sown and 260 oak seedlings were grown which would eventually form part of BirdLife's Foresta 2000 project.

About 460 students enrolled as members of Klabb Huttaf, BLM's youth section.

BirdLife said that although the campaign was not a competition, points were awarded to schools for every job done.

Sixty-two schools took part representing a total school population of 19,000 pupils. The highest-scoring schools were St Joseph, of Sliema - 2,375, Paola Primary B - 1,765 and St Joseph, of Blata l-Bajda - 1,720.
