Movement set up to protect Hondoq ir-Rummien

A movement has been set up to work for the protection of Hondoq ir-Rummien.

The movement, made up of members from several organisations in Qala, is against the proposed marina and hotel development in Qala.

The project, proposed by Gozo Prestige Holidays Ltd, includes a hotel, a small village and a yacht marina.

The Movement for the Protection of Hondoq ir-Rummien said a development of this nature was too extensive for such a small area like Hondoq ir-Rummien.

Consequently, the proposed buildings would be crammed along the rock face, turning what is currently a pleasant panorama into an eyesore.

The movement said the clear waters of Hondoq ir-Rummien would become heavily polluted by the heavy sea traffic.

"It is not just Hondoq ir-Rummien that will suffer but the whole village of Qala.

"The traffic generated by such a development would have to make its way through the quiet narrow streets of the village, destroying the peace for which it is so well known."

It called on Qala residents to vote no in the forthcoming referendum on the development, to sign a national petition against the project and to make their voice heard in every possible way.
